What is Literary Criticism?

Literary criticism can include elements such as:

  • Examination of the principles that influenced their creation
  • Comparison of a work with other works of the same genre
  • Examination of how the writer’s background influenced a work
  • Examination of the relationship of a work to the writer, the audience, and society
  • Examination of the way in which the writer communicates ideas, linguistic techniques, etc.
  • Historical, philosophical, or sociological analysis of a work.
