Overview of Syrian culture and history

Welcome! Although the modern nation known as Syria has officially existed only since 1946, the area itself has a long and rich cultural history. Its largest cities, Damascus and Aleppo, are two of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Now mired in a devastating civil war since 2011, Syria has suffered catastrophic losses. Millions of Syrians have been killed or forced to flee their homes, and irreplaceable art and cultural artifacts have been destroyed.

In this Subject Guide, you will find links to information on Syria, its people, and culture. It is not meant to be exhaustive, but is here to give you an idea of the rich history of the country, both before and during the current war.

The HCC Cultural Diversity Committee has focused on Syria as a country of interest for the 2018-2019 academic year. HCC librarians are happy to help locate more resources.
