Wealth, Law, and Moral Authority: Marriage and Christian Mobilization in Interwar Cameroon
The article examines the impact of economic development and colonial marriage law on bridewealth practices in Cameroon from the 1920s to 1960. Government regulation of bridewealth practice and African marriage is explored as well as social mobility and justice corollaries. Also discussed are the efforts of Catholic priests including Jean Zoa to stop bridewealth practices due to its negative impact on people and the society and to protest political and moral corruption of marriage in law.
