William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, England. By the time he was 30 years old, he was living and working in London as a member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men acting company. Over the course of his life, he wrote 38 plays and over 150 sonnets and poems. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, and his plays have been performed countless times, both on stage and in film. He died in 1616 leaving a body of work that has shaped the language and culture.
